The Gothfather

“Gothy Kong”

(2010) Dir. Mats Lundberg (Review by RD)

Movies fall through the cracks all the time, some well deserving of the cold, dark abyss of obscurity – others – well, they are just misunderstood. Much like goths. And much like this made-by-goths-for-goths patchwork of wonder and “what the fuck?”that is The Gothfather. Made in the year 2761 (says it right on the box), this patchwork of primitive folk art, music video, found footage, computer game design and comic book storytelling is far more interesting, creative and tingle-inducing than any given 20 shot-on-video excuses to show tits and ass in some state of undress or distress. Important to note, if your thing is reality, The Gothfatherain’t for you – but please take that as my sincere urge for you to stroll down the hole with this one in between your daily doses of movie viewing or substance abuse. Somewhere in the future, past, present of some dimension or another – here or otherwise, the Gothfather controls most things – but Lord Emo wants him dead, so it’s up to Gothfather’s two leather-clad lookers to travel the underworld to save him –and along the way these luscious ladies encounter dark castles, animated pigs, drilling machines, vampires, Donkey Kong (yes, I said Donkey Kong!) in a quest to stop the evil emo plan. The magic is in the method here, with so many styles upon styles and audio and visual tricks on display the whole experience of this DVD is difficult to describe but impossible not to recommend as some kind of visionary, futuristic, live actionhorror comic book art project, shot on home video by that weird but very hot goth chick who sits in the back of the class.
